One of biggest menaces in the world as far as diseases are concerned are sexually transmitted diseases or abbreviated as stds. In this article we have a look at the different types of stds that major sections of the populations of the world are suffering from. Any disease that spreads by way of any sort of sexual contact is clubbed under the category of stds. Most readers must have heard or read about the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS as being one of the deadliest types of stds which claims thousands of lives every year but beyond AIDS there are other types of stds which are just as dangerous and result in long term deformities. Following are the most widespread types of stds that one should be aware of so that one can take affective precautions against them: -
A) Vaginitis: - As the name suggests, Vaginitis is an infection of the Vagina- the female genital organ. The infection affects the fluid that is responsible for maintaining the health and well being of the vagina. The condition makes the fluid of a thicker consistency than usual and one of the most obvious signs of the fact that a woman might be suffering from this condition is a foul smell in the above mentioned fluid. It is one of those types of stds which is not life threatening and without any long term effects but wrong medication and carelessness could make it worse. It is a bacterial infection and can be caused after sexual intercourse, after periods or also before or after child birth.
B) Chlamydia: - Chlamydia is one of the most dreaded types of stds in the world affecting millions of people from the Americas to Australia and everywhere in between. Like Vaginitis, Chlamydia is also a bacterial infection which gets passed on from one sexual partner to another. If the partner is suffering from the infection then the infection will inevitably get passed on if the individuals indulge in unprotected sexual acts like sexual intercourse, anal sex or even oral sex. The infection can have gruesome long term ill effects like arthritis, infertility (in both men and women), swelling of testicles among others.
C) AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome): - AIDS is possibly the most well documented among all the types of stds which have been studied by physicians because of the millions of deaths it has caused across the world. The AIDS virus kills off the bodies immunity and once that happens the body is not able to survive the most basic of ailments like cough, cold or any sort of illness that requires the body to fight it off to some extent. AIDA virus is spread when individuals indulge in irresponsible and unprotected sex with people who are infected with the AIDS virus. The disease might also spread when individuals share needles during the partaking of recreational drugs or when an infected mother feeds her new born with her breast milk.
A rather unique feature of AIDS which differentiates it with other types of stds is the fact that the symptoms show up within a very short span of time. Billions of dollars have been spent so far in trying to find out a cure for AIDS but unfortunately no definite cure has yet been discovered but only certain medicines have been discovered which delay inevitable death for some time. The advice for most people is pretty basic and that is not to have unprotected sex and one must bear in mind that even oral sex with an infected person will lead to infection.
D) Syphilis: - Syphilis is possibly the oldest known among the different types of stds from which people have suffered. Like some of the other sexually transmitted diseases that have been discussed above Syphilis is also spread through bacterial infection and is caused when an infected individual participates in sex with someone who is not. Needless to say, the uninfected person catches syphilis. The symptoms of this disease are pretty confusing because many of the signs are similar to other diseases which might be harmless, however a specialist will always be able to decipher syphilis by one glance at the brown coloured sores that grow in and around the genital organs in both men and women.
The primary reason for syphilis is unprotected and indiscriminate sexual acts that people participate in. It is one of those types of stds which leads to a long and painful death if proper medical care is not administered on time. If the patient is at the final stage of syphilis then it is without doubt an agony of extraordinary proportions before eventual death. In most cases, where it reaches that stage the patient suffers from brain malfunction, complications of the heart and even blindness of all things.
E)Genital Herpes: - Herpes is the first type of sexually transmitted disease in this particular list which is caused by a virus. So far we have looked at different types of stds which are caused by bacterial infection but Herpes is caused by the HSV-1 and HSV-2 types of viruses The primary indications that an individual has Herpes are the blisters that surface in the genital organs of both males and females, which cause agony in the suffering individual due to the pain, itching and burning sensations which it causes. This disease may be caused from unprotected sex but even kissing an affected individual who is suffering would cause contamination and onset of Herpes. Most researchers in leading medical schools of the world have shown a direct relation between Herpes and AIDS. It has been shown that Herpes makes the body of an individuals less resistant to external threats and in turn the body becomes a convenient target for the HIV virus.
F) Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: - The infamous Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which has caused infertility in millions of women across the world is an effect of two other types of stds. We have already discussed the features of gonorrhoea and chlamydia but Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is caused as a direct consequence of these 2 bacterial stds. The bacterial infections caused by those two types of stds lead to further infection of the reproductive organs of the patient like the uterus, fallopian tube and also excruciating aching in the pelvic region. The condition is painful and it makes it extremely difficult to conceive making the woman infertile and if the condition is not taken care of immediately with the help of antibiotics then there is a real chance that the woman will stay infertile in the long run. Pain in the pelvis region or if the pelvic feels more tender than normal then women should waste no time in seeking the guidance of their physicians. It is recommended that females who lead an active conjugal existence should make it a point to get a thorough check up done on a yearly basis so as to make sure that these types of stds do not rear their ugly head.
G) Gonorrhoea: – During the early 20th century and before that Gonorrhoea used to be one of the most widespread types of stds during the early 20th century and before. Although it does not occur as much as it used to in those days, still there are millions of people across the world who still suffer and die from this dreaded sexually transmitted disease. Gonorrhoea is terribly infectious and can be transmitted by not only any sort of sexual contact but also the mouth of anyone suffering from the condition. The Gonorrhoea bacteria clogs up the urinal track in both males and females and in addition to that it can also be found on other parts of the body as well.
H) Genital Warts: - As with all the other conditions in this rather exhaustive list of the types of stds, Genital Warts are also caused due to wanton and irresponsible sexual intercourse or anal sex with a person who suffers from it. The warts are found on the genital organs of both males as well as females and usually found on the vagina, the clitoris, the penis or even the scrotum and in most cases it causes itching and burning sensations. Although it is not a life threatening phenomenon, one must make sure that he takes the supports of medication as soon as possible so that the situation is resurrected as soon s it had surfaced.
Hopefully, this article has been able to shed some light on some of the most widely occurring types of stds which are known to cause extreme agony and consternation in the people who suffer from it. In some of the cases like AIDS or Syphilis, the condition may also lead to death; so it is quite imperative that all individuals make sure that they do not have unprotected sex under any circumstances. A bit of restraint can surely help people in avoiding these notorious diseases and lead a rewarding life.
